Coming March 19th, Repo Men (which is not a remake of Repo Man, the awesome 80’s campy movie with Emilio Estevez, by the way) gives a creepy insight on what might be around the corner for us, and we’re not talking about the Health Care reform. No, in this future, a company called The Union makes replacement organs for humans, which is a scientific breakthrough a lot of people would welcome today. The downside of this is that if you don’t pay your bill, they send their guys, like Jude Law and Forest Whitaker, and they take it back, leaving you most likely dead, or at least in pretty bad shape. But when Jude Law gets hurt during a intervention and ends up with a replacement part that he cannot pay for, the sh…t hits the fan.

Now that’s not a lot of cars so far, but as you will see in the trailer below, these badass repo guys drive Volkswagen Touareg. The VW logo is clearly visible at the beginning of the trailer and you can recognize it from the rear in another angle. We don’t know yet if VW sponsored the movie, but we’ll find out soon. We thought the Bridgestone commcial for the big game was okay, just not as fun as the fantastic “screaming squirrel” from last year. But it looked oddly familiar : the 80’s sci-fi look, the young couple being stopped by a bunch of thugs at night on a deserted road, the challenge “your… or your girl”… It’s the intro scene of The Wraith! No PPG/Dodge “Turbo Interceptor” MS4 here, but a mashup of parts and pipes that reminds of the Delorean from Back to the Future. It could have been funny to have Charlie Sheen do a cameo in there (after all, he’s already doing commercials for Hanes…).
We have to salute the good 80’s movie car culture from the creative people behind the commercial though. Who knows, maybe The Wraith gets some renewed popularity from this, maybe even a Hollywood producer gets his wheels turning and we get a remake in 2012? That could be kind of cool, what do you guys think? Leave your comments!

Being able to seat in the A-Team van was a childhood dream came true.

Last Saturday, August 15th, a big movie props and vehicle auction was held at LA Center Studios. Most of the movie cars came from Picture Car Warehouse, Hollywood’s biggest provider of wheeled heroes, villains, stars and extras. PCW was founded by Ted Moser and has supplied vehicles for hundred of movies and TV shows, including the Fast and Furious franchise, Knight Rider, Grindhouse, XXX, Mad Men, Transformers and Indiana Jones. Up for auction were, among others, the green chopper from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen that Megan Fox liked so much, along with the “Barricade” Saleen Mustang and the “Landmine” sandrail, the van from Little Miss Sunshine, some Challengers fromThe Bucket List, the ‘32 hot rod from the latest Indiana Jones, KITT from the TV movie Knight Rider 2000, a pair of humongous H2s from Dragonball , an F-Bomb Camaro from Fast & Furious… and an A-Team van replica! A few cars from other collectors and a lot of props were there as well.

Cars + Movies was there and we had the chance to meet and chat with the excellent Ted Moser, who proved to be a very approachable and knowledgeable car guy. He also gave a lot of explanations about the cars and the work that goes into them during the course of the event, whenever one of them went up.
A lot of effort is put by his crew to fabricate the vehicles in record time and with a lot of attention to details. And most of the time they make several copies of them, for instance one for close-ups, a few for the stunts and chase scenes…
Now, we don’t go to auctions very often and the atmosphere is electric, very fun. Unlike when you watch Barrett-Jackson on Speed, you really get caught up in the tension and the enthusiasm from both the buyers and the the auctioneer.

Seeing the stars in person is a bit like spotting a celebrity: some are just as beautiful, and some are better in makeup. But all around it was fantastic to see them up close and see a bit of what goes on behind the scenes. Call it nerdy, but being able to seat in the A-Team van was a childhood dream came true… and we’re dedicating an article and a gallery to it! So stay tuned.

The steal of the day was a ‘74 Challenger made to look like a ‘70, equipped with a 5.7L 360hp Hemi crate engine that went for $12,500. Keep reading for more prices and our huge photo gallery!

Despite GM’s financial turmoil, the launch of the Camaro is in full steam and the video section of the dedicated website focuses on the new Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie.

But, of course, if you’re a real die-hard fan you’ll be waiting for the upcoming Bumblebee edition of the Camaro!

Once again, a DBS met its maker on a James Bond shooting. Following the several ones destroyed during the rollover scene in Casino Royale and the one which wasn’t supposed to take a fatal bath in the Lake Garda on the set of Quantum of Solace, the much desired vehicle hit a stone wall in a quarry for what will be the climax of the chase in the upcoming movie.
For good measure, the bad guy’s vehicle is also destroyed in the scene, which MI6 describes as follow:

Bond is chased by villains in Alfa Romeos around the banks of Lake Garda, culminating in a devastating crash in the Canalgrande and Fantiscritti marble quarries. The action will form the pre-credits sequence to the movie and is expected to run for 15 minutes.

Sounds like a hell of thrill ride to start a movie and we can’t wait to see it. At the same time, we’re sad about the car, but we console ourselves by thinking (hoping?) that most of the good stuff (engine, interior…) had been taken out.

We haven’t paid much attention to the upcoming spy/comedy film yet, but there’s actually some car action in it, and even some product placement deals. Vespa is sponsoring it, and a Triumph is seen in the trailer jumping from the stairs of a building. Looks a fun movie with plenty of laughs and thrills, just like we like’em. Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway and “The Rock” seem to be doing perfectly well in this modern day version of the 1960’s TV show. We hope it won’t disapoint. Stay tuned for updates!

If you notice a lot of motorcycle action in the trailer below, that’s normal: Harley Davidson scored a big product placement deal with the production and we will talk more about the deal in another post.
But as often with Indy, some great vehicles will be used by the different protagonists, including the Ford GPA (or is it its russian version, the GAZ 69?), the weird-looking amphibious military vehicle we posted above. It’s not too often you get to see a car chase involving one!

The fourth installment of the Indiana Jones Adventures will be out on Thursday, May 22nd. That’s in two days only, so if you’re a big Indy fan, go get your tickets!

We’re not too keen on using Autoblog as a source so often, but they do have great articles, and we like to share some of them with you. Tuesday, they posted two “spy” videos from the set of Quantum of Solace, the next James Bond.
They don’t show much, but it’s quite fascinating to see the apparatus the production has to install on the Aston Martin DBS to shoot the scenes.

Spanish people have been granted an extra TV spot where the deal between Audi and Paramount Pictures is clearly shown (it’s also a webspecial in other countries). They exploit each other’s product. When Audi promotes its supercar, Iron Man gets some exposure; when a trailer is shown, the R8 appears. It’s Co-advertising at its best.

The ad mixes footage from Iron Man and some recycled bits of the first Audi R8 (we covered it in January). It probably didn’t cost much.

Nostalgia and revivals are in full force these days (lack of creativity? lazyness? good idea? need to go back to a more comfy era during our uncertain times?) and KITT is on TV again, so what’s next? Here’s a three-part overview.

The A-Team

Yep, one of the all-time crowd favorites will be back in 2009, but as a movie, which seems to be the big trend (Knight Rider being the exception). Ice Cube is rumored to be replacing Mr.T as Sgt. Bosco ‘B.A.’ Baracus, while Woody Harrelson would be Capt. H.M. ‘Howling Mad’ Murdock, originally pplayed by Dwight Schultz. As for the van… GM must be trying real hard to not lose the product placement contract to Ford like they did on the Knight Rider!
Release date: June 12, 2009.

Magnum P.I

Funny how things are in the air sometimes…
Right when we were getting this article about the upcoming Magnum movie ready, Autoblog wrote about it, citing an article from Cinematical. On our part, we got the news just a couple days ago from a little research on Wikipedia and IMDb:

In January 2006, it was announced a feature film is again in the planning stages (after several false starts most recently in 2005) and Rawson Marshall Thurber (whose filmmaking credits notably include Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story) would write and direct the screenplay.
In January 2007, it was reported Matthew McConaughey would play Magnum, with Steve Zahn as Rick, Tyrese Gibson as T.C., and William H. Macy as Higgins.

IMDBpro.com has said that on January 17, 2007, the script is finished and the film will be released in 2009.
It is not known whether the film will be simply titled Magnum, P.I., or whether a title of a more revisionist nature will be used instead.

We’re looking forward to see the adaptation but, considering the previous credits of the screenwriter, we’re also anxious to see if it would keep the original Magnum feeling or if it would become a parody like Starsky and Hutch with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. But Matthew McConaughey is not Ben Stiller, so we can keep our hopes up.
Release date: 2009.

Death Race 2000

We told you about the remake of Death Race 2000 before, but more details are starting to leak about the Jason Statham-lead feature. So far it’s been shortened to Death Race and we learned from concept artist extraordinaire Harald Belker yesterday, that he is the one who was in charge of the design for all the vehicles. According to him, he “was given some of the hottest cars on the market” and had to “desconstruct” them. We sure are looking forward to see the result!
