It’s a Michael Bay kind of Sunday today, with commercials shot by Hollywood’s explosion specialist (and we’re not talking about Transformers, just real TV commercials). We’ll show you a little retrospective of his TV ads and movie career
We started with Car Carrier, the one he directed in 2004 for Chevy which, even if it doesn’t feature any robots, shares a lot of visual clues with Transformers. The vehicles seem to be unmanned, the chase, the angles, the music and… well, it’s the same guy behind the camera. Very clean and engaging.
“Mmm….Genius”
We’ll continue after the jump with the one he recently directed for Verizon and, although there’s no cars in it, it’s worth watching. It’s funny if you don’t take it too seriously and you can see BumbleBee in the background. Looks like the guy can actually show some self-mockery.
Keep reading and watch videos of Bay’s best ads and movies.
One of the tie-in Transformers ads for Chevy:
And to finish well… his Victoria Secret ad.
Movies
Michael Bay’s career started in the music video industry (which explains some of his full-feature style, that blends the action with the music and is very fast-paced), then went into TV commercials and later in the movie business. Highly visual, epic, explosive define his work quite well. However, thin on story and characters have been recurrent critics of his work. But whether you like him or not, Bay has shot some of the best car chases in History, notably in Bad Boys I and II, The Rock and Transformers.
The freeway one in Bad Boys II is particularly over-the-top but very well shot.
To get an overall look at his movies, you might want to watch this 10 min video, where they’re very well summed-up -doesn’t mean they’re good, it’s just a good sum-up.
