Knight Rider last night

February 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Boy. KITT messed up that Yukon.

NBC aired its two-hour movie “event” last night and of course we were in front of the TV.
While we were pleasantly surprised by the show -which was better than we expected- it could have been much better.

There’s been tons of reactions on the Internet, both by websites and their users, and they tend to be either very sour (like Autoblog and its “liveblog” (and most of the comments on it), or the Seattle Post Intelligencer), or very sweet (like the Knight Rider Online).
On NBC.com, the comments reflect the same trends: net-net wrote” We loved the way you combined the new knight rider with the original. It’s definitly a show we’ll continue to watch.” and Craig wrote “KNIGHT RIDER = 1 FAT FORD COMMERCIAL.”

So what was good, and what was awful? Here we go with our lists:

Pros

  • FBI agent Carrie Rivai has a girl met the night before in her bed. Knight Rider openly refers to lesbian sex on the air? Good, we’re not in the 80’s anymore.
  • KITT transformation is very cool, and so are the bullets bouncing on the body.
  • Even though we were not supporters of KITT as a Mustang, we got to admit it looked cool. And the sound of the engine is great.
  • KITT’s interior, designed by Harald Belker, looks cool.
  • Cons

  • Ford, Ford, Ford. Wayyyyyyy to much Ford. They have to learn when too much is too much. This kind of marketing strategy may have the reverse effect on the sales.
  • Gee, even the other vehicles were Ford or Ford-owned (Volvo, Land Rover…). The bad guys crashed in a debadged GMC Yukon. Brainwashing.
  • Mike Traceur is a player, and good for him. But two girls in his bed? Laughable.
  • The CGI of KITT speeding to Vegas (choper view style), was awful.
  • BlackRiver is the enemy and they are mercenaries working in Irak? Why not call it Blackwater directly? OR find another name…
  • except the Hoff, the actors weren’t expressive enough. Mike was barely moved when his mom died.
  • the KITT/Kilmer duo worked ok, but lacked some personality
  • no Turbo-Boost?
  • not a single jump in 2 hours? damn, those Mustangs must be too expensive to take the risk. It WAS one of the appeal of the original, though.
  • Anyway, NBC got good ratings out of it, since the Knight Rider Online revealed the show was second last night, just behind Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, earning a 6.9/10. So maybe we’ll get a full season next year or even in September

In short, we almost liked it, we want to see it back, but please, NBC and gang, make some changes!

Be kind, rewind: if you’ve missed it, or want to see it again, the full movie is viewable/downloadable on NBC Video Rewind, for free.
