Sunday ads: Pontiac, Sin City & Renaissance style

Pontiax Sin City & Renaissance

As you can tell, today is Pontiac day, with two commercials relying on recent movies. The first one was linked to Transformers, with Megan Fox (read our previous article: Megan Fox hearts Pontiac), while the second one, entirely in black and white (except for the Pontiac logo) seems to be inspired by the movies Sin City (2005) and Renaissance (2006).

In the numerous ways that cars and movies influence each other, it’s very often visible in car commercials.

When they do so, they:

  • show how influential a movie is. A very successful film is very likely to be copied or being referred to (cultural reference or spoof, i.e all the Star Wars jokes in ads, movies, TV shows)
  • the inspiration is also good for the ad agencies, it makes their lives easier
  • last but not least, it’s good for the brands who are “in” the trend. It’s good for their cool factor and can make them seem closer to their target population.
  • However, these references have to be used carefully, since by getting closer to one of their target group, a brand can alienate itself from another one.
